Renting a home or apartment definitely has its advantages, but it can also create some extra work when it comes time to move out. Most landlords and apartment complexes will require you to give your place a thorough cleaning before you leave. Of course, they can’t force you to do this, but if you don’t you will be charged (read: overcharged).

That means the money will either be deducted from your security deposit or billed to you and if you don’t pay it you will be put into a database meaning you will likely never be able to rent again until you get it paid off.

Even if you do clean everything some places will still charge you just because they can. Those are some pretty serious consequences for not cleaning your carpets. Even though it may not be fair you will likely want to play ball and do what they ask of you.

After getting all of your furniture and boxes out of your old place, the last thing you want to do is start scrubbing the floors and cleaning the toilets, but this is, unfortunately, a necessary evil. The good news is you don’t have to do everything; you can leave the carpet cleaning to the professionals. In fact, many apartments require you to do so.

The following are just some of the many things you will need to clean before moving out if you don’t want to be charged:

  • Clean all doors and knobs
  • Clean all windows
  • Clean any soap scum off bathroom tiles and tub or shower
  • Clean baseboards and walls
  • Clean light switches and outlets
  • Clean mirrors
  • Clean out all drawers and cabinets
  • Clean the inside and outside of the refrigerator, oven, dishwasher, and microwave
  • Cut the grass and pull the weeds if you maintain a yard
  • Dust the ceiling fixtures (fans, lights)
  • Empty and sweep the garage
  • Remove all nails and screws from walls and use putty to cover the holes
  • Remove all trash or you will be charged a fee

Be sure to fill out your move-in inspection checklist thoroughly, if you didn’t do it last time make sure you do it once you get moved into your new home so you are not accountable for any previously existing damage to the unit.
