Those who don’t know much about flooring may not even realize the differences among various types of wood flooring. In reality, there are many different types of categories of hardwood flooring, and each type has certain benefits associated with it.

Types of Wood

The most commonly used woods for flooring purposes are oak, maple, and cherry. There are several other options including walnut, ash, bamboo, and mahogany, as well as more exotic species that come with a premium price tag, including teak, mesquite, and Jarrah.

Solid Wood Flooring

There are three main types of solid wood flooring, which are each available in either unfinished or pre-finished versions.

  1. Strip Flooring – has a set width but can vary in thickness.
  2. Plank Flooring – only comes in two thicknesses, but widths can vary.
  3. Parquet Flooring – offers a very different look than other hardwoods, consisting of geometrical patterns of individual wood slats held together.

Unfinished flooring needs to be sanded at the job site and finished after installation, which is helpful for matching existing flooring on location. Pre-finished flooring only needs to be installed at its destination. Solid wood flooring can only be installed on or above ground level, or over a wood sub-floor, and is also very sensitive to moisture.

Engineered Wood Flooring

This flooring option should not be confused with laminate wood flooring. It is made from layers of plastic laminate veneer combined with real wood. This composite flooring has many benefits including:

  • Increased stability
  • Can be installed in any room of the house including basements, rec rooms, and bathrooms
  • Resists expanding and contracting due to fluctuations in temperature and humidity
